Tracy Dorrington-Skinner was Born in Truro, Nova S

Tracy Dorrington-Skinner was Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, in the African Nova Scotian community fondly known as “The Marsh.” She is the third of 5 children, a mother to two beautiful adult daughters and a grandmother to two very handsome, unique and energetic boys.

Tracy has been working at Third Place Transition House since 2022 and has found her passion through this work. She enjoys sharing her lived experience, hopeful that women find a sense of hope and healing through their journey.

Tracy grew up in the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children and returned to Truro to nurture her family. She obtained her Human Services Diploma with a concentration in Child and Youth Services from NSCC in 1999 and has worked as an African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker with the CCRCE for over 20 years. Tracy is a Co-Founder of the group V.O.I.C.E.S. (Victims of Institutional Child Exploitation Society) as a representative for the former residents of the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children who suffered abuse while a resident, and helped lead the first of its kind Restorative Inquiry into the allegation, leading the province and the perhaps the world in a new way forward.

As The Founder of Black Girl Magic Society, a resource Centre for Women of African Ancestry in Colchester County, Tracy has a goal to bring awareness to Anti Black Racism as it impacts Black Women, their families and community. She aims to provide resources that address the racial impacts on the African Nova Scotian community.

Tracy is currently enrolled in the Africentric Bachelor of Social Work Cohort at Dalhousie University, set to graduate in 2026. She hopes to continue to bring awareness to the social justice issues that impact Black Canadians through an Africentric lens.

Outside of work, Tracy enjoys painting, gardening and spending time with her family.

Tracy feels very fortunate to have had folks in her life that encouraged her to think bigger, talk louder and act bolder. She hopes to share those experiences wherever she goes, in hopes of uplifting others.

Twila MacDonald was born and raised in Truro, Nova

Twila MacDonald was born and raised in Truro, Nova Scotia. She is a mother and is passionate about women’s rights, community and social justice.

Twila holds a Youth Care Diploma from Jane Norman College, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Women’s Studies from Mount Saint Vincent University and is completing her Bachelor of Social Work degree at Dalhousie University. Twila’s professional experience includes children and youth care, family counseling, women’s support counseling and income and employment support.

In her spare time, she fuels her passion in volunteering with various boards, organizations and committees.

Twila has been employed with Third Place Transition House since 2020 and will tell you how much she loves it. “The key motivator for working in this field was seeing the need for representation within support counselor roles, overcoming and understanding the barriers for marginalized communities seeking services”. Her future plans are to continue supporting women and children using an Africentric and anti oppressive lens.

Meet Korinne McIntyre, a devoted mother who made the brave decision to leave her long-term job in search of a more fulfilling career. With a strong desire to make a difference, Korinne embarked on a new path at Third Place Transition House as a casual Support Counsellor. This role allows her to not only find purpose but also spend quality time with her 2.5-year-old daughter.

In Korinne’s younger years, she had limited knowledge about her African heritage. However, she has started a journey of self-discovery and is actively seeking to learn and embrace her identity as African Nova Scotian. Through her commitment to understanding her roots, Korinne is not only enriching her own life but also contributing to the preservation and celebration of African Heritage. ❤💛💚

Family violence encompasses a range of abusive behaviours which function to control and harm family members. Family violence includes many different forms of physical, sexual and emotional abuse, as well as neglect. It includes intimate partner violence, as well as child and elder abuse.
